Upcoming Music at Good Shepherd
HYMNS for the 7th Sunday of Ordinary Time (2.23.2025)It sounds like this.
The Gloria is omitted during Lent, except on Solemnities. This Lent, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary occurs on Wednesday 3/19, and the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord is on Tuesday 3/25. Additionally, we'll sing a Gloria on Holy Thursday at the Mass of the Lord's Supper.
On those three occasions, as well as during Easter Season, we'll use this Gloria from the Mass of St. Philip Neri by Paul Jernberg:
It sounds like this.
The Gospel Acclamation during Lent cannot contain the word "Alleluia," and traditionally, does not even include a "refrain" of the same text week-to-week, but rather just the appropriate bit of Scripture either plucked from the Gospel reading of the day, or one that is complementary to it. In modern practice, however, it has become popular and licit to include a refrain such as this one:
in such cases, the Verse Before the Gospel is chanted by a cantor or the choir in between the congregation singing this refrain, just as it is chanted between "Alleluias" during other parts of the liturgical year.
The Sanctus (or Holy, Holy, Holy) is always prayed by both the priest and the congregation after the Preface in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This Lent, we'll use the one from Mass XVIII, another familiar one for us:It sounds like this.
Finally the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) also comes to us from Mass XVIII, and as of this writing, and hasn't been recently used at this parish. It is a very useful one to know and practice, however, as even parishes who use very little Latin in their liturgies will often use this chant for special occasions like Lent and Holy Week, and traveling Catholics are likely to encounter it when they're not at their home parish.
